Treatment of wild-type worms increased their mean LS by a mean of 44 percent, and treatment of prematurely aging worms resulted in normalization of their LS (a 67 percent increase). |

sod-2 mutants are long-lived (maximum lifespan increased by 30%) despite a significant increase in oxidatively damaged proteins. The lifespan of sod1, sod3, sod4 and sod5 mutants was not affected. Examination of worm lifespan revealed that sod-1; sod-3; sod-5 mutant worms live as long as wild-type worms while both sod-2; sod-3; sod-5 and sod-1; sod-2; sod- 4 mutant worms live significantly longer than wild-type (maximum lifespan increased by 30%). |

Dietary restriction |
Adult worms were transferred to liquid axenic media (3% soy protein, 3% yeast extract, .05% hemogloblin (Houthoofd et al., 2002) and 5 mg/L of cholesterol) that was supplemented with tetracycline (12.5 mg/L) and ampicillin (100 mg/L) to prevent bacterial growth. The worms were transferred to fresh media approximately every 2 weeks. |

In an acute survival test using 200 mM paraquat solution, sod-1 worms were hypersensitive to paraquat, whereas, surprisingly, sod-3 or sod-4 worms actually had a reduced sensitivity to paraquat. Mutational inactivation of other isoforms of sod had no effect on sensitivity to paraquat in this acute assay. |
